Mapping Senses

My neighborhood is in an area that is considered to be in the more 'unsafe' part of town. I think I would agree, though maybe not completely. I agree it is in an ambiguous part of town, but I don't feel  uncomfortable at all really.

From the moment I walked out my door in my apartment complex, my senses were intuitively drawn to the nature and foliage around me. I spent some time walking and being present around my area, just listening, watching and looking for some detail that will hopefully trigger inspiration within me.

I had initially thought that I could capture images of interesting textures as checkpoints for where I am on my journey. Instead, spending more time out there, I inevitably started to feel a wave of the heat of summer wash through me. But it didn't feel like regular, boring summer, it felt like summer when I was a kid.

I couldn't quite put into words as to why, so I sought to capture that feeling instead, through both visual and auditory senses.

The open cactus fruit I imagine split between hungry fruit bats.

The sounds of the pigeons softly cooing in the warm and very minimal breeze.

The beating summer heat on the tops of my head and shoulders,

The telephone lines scattered with fleeting
but watchful birds

The paths I followed in my journey had nothing to do with the tangible objects or creatures I was seeing before me,

I was guided solely through the intense feeling of "I have felt this feeling before".

Not resurfaced memory, but something like a deep deja vu.  It is a very warm feeling to me.

  1. Hey marianna! I also live in an "unsafe" neighborhood, but have found myself to love all the little things. I really love your choice of color in this series.
