Filling in the Space

What is it that makes a person truly successful in life? The meaning of success is found through each persons individual values, dreams and the surrounding sociological culture of each person. Finding that answer is not cut and dry, however status quos hint at a societal standard for what success is 'suppose' to mean. In the United States, success is tied to the economics. Jobs, nice homes, cars and all the other expensive things. Money. The more money you have, the more you can get...and get away with. Even if you have enough money to take everything, you will never have enough. Without it, you might as well have nothing at all. Because success here is bound by America's capitalistic greed-what is love and fulfillment when you can buy it all anyway? Greed has acted as the economic foundation for so long that the whole country seems to have become taken with the over industrialized ways of life. A life made for roads and cars to get to and from work, a life made for fast food and lunch in a timely manner. Our communities are found in traffic jams. Our lives are filled with working tirelessly until eventual retirement or death. Our lives have no room for things such as stillness. Our spirits lost underneath the weight of the cracked cement of the unused sidewalks we pass by everyday. It's time to find our way back to soul. Remove the all consuming industrial mask. It's time to finally return. To finally fill in that empty place within each and every one of us once and for all. Through my exploration of the never ending greed within the American status quo of industrialized society, I reintroduce a lens to walk through life using the surrounding world around me within the small town of Hayward, Wisconsin and inspired by the traditional buddhist ideals of the Four Noble Truths, of stillness and of mindfulness to find and explore what true fulfillment really means. Fulfillment is something that already exists within the echoes of our hearts, not to be found-but to be made aware of. It is being in the here and now that provides the nutrients our souls yearn for. It is written well within the spaces that thrive with or without human interference. It is within these scenes in which you can find all which money can never buy. And it is here where souls collectively see each other, compassion is sparked and the spaces that once looked empty now seem to be full of life, survival, passion and spirit. What exactly is the space you are trying to fill?

  1. This is a great reminder for everyone. I think we get so lost in our daily lives and the everyday routines that we often forget that life is meant to be lived, and we are supposed to be living in every moment. Humans began living so freely, and now, while still "free," we are still shackled down in some way. We find ourselves in this endless loop/cycle because we need to be there to survive, but then we aren't truly living the free life we work so hard for. Beautiful project!

  2. Marianna,
Your project was well put together and had such a strong message. The poetic text as well as the shift from driving to nature was powerful. It really helped push your message that true success and fulfillment are not found through wealth and capitalist ideals, rather, they're found through a connection to the real world. One thing to consider is adding ambient sounds to clips with background voices. This could help make those transitions feel smoother and more cohesive. Overall, nice work!

  3. The message here is so sentimental and calls us to question our place on Earth. There is this need to fill our lives with the material and artificial that we forget the value of what is already here. Perhaps, being appreciative of nature and what it offers inspires us to nurture and protect the fruits of our own nature. The fruit that grows with us and offers flesh of nostalgia/belonging, and seeds of knowledge. The pauses offer room to place ourselves into the narrative. The juxtaposition between the natural and artificial was so powerful. Idea: You could layer audio over the city part to represent sound pollution in cities and to further juxtapose the nature part. I enjoyed your project because it made me think deeply about my own existence and ways I could connect back to nature.

  4. I loved this project, immediately when I saw the video, I knew that it was yours from our untrue narratives class. You really have such a unique style in you videos that make them feel like short films. the concept you chose was also well done, I hate that success is measured in money so you making this was very relatable for me. Overall it was really well made!

  5. Your reflection is such a profound critique of American materialism and a beautiful call to rediscover fulfillment beyond consumerism! I really appreciate how you connect industrialized life’s emptiness with the richness found in mindfulness, stillness, and connection to place. This thoughtful perspective invites us all to reconsider what truly nourishes the soul. Truly this resonated with me both as an individual and as an American in love with the outdoors and determined to protect our parks haha
